5 Things to Know Before Buying Secondhand Cashmere on Vinted

You might be asking, why would we be promoting another resale platform for secondhand cashmere (other than our own)? Well, it's because we really do believe in the positive impact of secondhand, whether you choose to shop with us or elsewhere. However, with fibres like cashmere on often un-curated platforms like Vinted, we want to make sure you know what you're spending your money on before you decide to take the plunge.

Consumer to consumer channels don't offer guarantees on the quality of the pieces you're buying, unlike our small team who process, refresh and repair (where needed) each and every piece with the view to keeping re-wearable cashmere in your wardrobe for longer. From a couple of photos and a description you might not be able to see exactly what you're investing in, like... whether the item has been shrunk, does it have wear? Is it really bobbly?

We guarantee that any cashmere bought from us has zero holes, zero worn areas and zero stains. We thoughtfully sort though every piece to ensure nothing we sell is shrunk, misshapen and bobbly. We lovingly restore each piece back to its former glory.

Whether you're looking for a classic cashmere jumper, cardigan, scarf or luxury designer knitwear, here's what you need to know...

1. Always Check the Fibre Composition

Not all knitwear labelled as "cashmere" contains 100% cashmere. Many garments are made from cashmere blends that include wool, cotton, viscose, nylon, or synthetic fibres.

Before buying, carefully read the item description and examine photos of the care label.

Look for:

  • 100% cashmere for maximum softness and warmth
  • Cashmere-wool blends for added durability
  • The exact fibre percentage if listed

If the seller hasn't included a photo of the composition label, don't hesitate to ask. Genuine cashmere is an investment, even when buying secondhand, so it's worth ensuring you know exactly what you're getting.

Search tip: Search terms like 100% cashmere jumper, pure cashmere knitwear, and cashmere blend sweater can help you find the best options.

2. Check for Signs of Proper Care

Cashmere can last for decades when looked after correctly. A well-maintained secondhand cashmere is often a better purchase than a poorly cared-for newer piece.

Look for signs that the item has been properly stored and cared for:

  • No visible stains or discolouration
  • No stretched cuffs or misshapen areas
  • Minimal pilling
  • Minimal fuzziness
  • Clear, detailed photographs
  • Honest descriptions from the seller

You can also ask sellers whether the item has been hand washed, dry cleaned or stored with moth protection. A little detective work can help you secure beautiful quality cashmere that still has years of wear left.

3. Pay Attention to Measurements

Sizing varies significantly between brands, especially when buying vintage or secondhand cashmere.

Rather than relying solely on the stated size, check the measurements provided by the seller.

Important measurements include:

  • Chest/bust width
  • Shoulder width
  • Sleeve length
  • Garment length

If the measurements aren't listed, request them before buying. This will save on disappointment and (fingers crossed!) reduce the likelihood that you'll have to return it. Also, remember that some cashmere pieces are designed to fit oversized, while others have a more fitted silhouette.

4. Research the Brand

One of the biggest advantages of buying secondhand cashmere is being able to buy premium brands at a fraction of their original price.

Some brands are particularly well-known for producing beautiful quality cashmere, including:

Researching the original retail value, fibre quality and customer reviews can help you find pieces that offer exceptional value for money. In many cases, a secondhand premium cashmere jumper will do so much better than a cheaper new alternative.

5. Check the Tightness of the Neck Label

When you look at the photos, take a look to see if the neck label at the back of the piece is baggy or sitting correctly. If it is baggy, it's means that the fabric around it has shrunk, therefore the piece has shrunk from its original size. This is a really clear indicator as to whether the knit that you're looking at is meant to be the size it is listed as.

Why Buying Secondhand Cashmere Makes Sense

Choosing secondhand cashmere is not only budget-friendly but also environmentally responsible. Extending the lifespan of existing clothes reduces textile waste and supports a more sustainable fashion industry. By shopping for secondhand cashmere, you can enjoy luxury knitwear at a fraction of the cost while making a more conscious fashion choice.

With a little patience and attention to detail, you can find beautiful cashmere jumpers, cardigans and accessories that feel luxurious and last for years.
