How to Save a Cashmere Jumper with Worn Sleeves: A Knitwear Upcycling Guide

Here's a simple way to extend the life of your cashmere knitwear...

Cashmere jumpers are designed to last for years, but even the best knitwear can show wear over time—especially at the elbows. If the sleeves of your jumper have worn through, don’t throw it away. A simple alteration can give it a second life.

One of the easiest ways to save a jumper with damaged sleeves is to remove the sleeves and transform it into a vest. This works particularly well with cashmere and fine wool knitwear, creating a lightweight layering piece that’s perfect for transitional weather.

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you safely remove the sleeves from your jumper or cardigan.

What You’ll Need

  • Small scissors or a seam ripper

  • A darning needle or tapestry needle

Take your time with this process—cashmere yarn is delicate and worth handling carefully.

Step 1: Find the Chain Stitch in the Armhole Seam

Most knitted garments are assembled using a chain stitch to connect the sleeves to the body. Look inside the armhole seam for a chain-like thread (it looks like a plat) that runs along the join.

This stitch is designed to be removed if needed, which is what makes alterations like this possible!

.

Step 2: Carefully Unpick the Chain Stitch

Once you find the correct starting point, gently pull or unpick the chain stitch. If you catch the right end of the chain, the seam may start to unravel smoothly.

.

Step 3: Unpick the Yarn at the Armpit

At the underarm, there are usually a few additional stitches securing the sleeve and side seam together.

Carefully unpick these yarns so the sleeve can separate from the body of the jumper. Be cautious not to cut into the main knitted fabric.

Step 4: Secure the Shoulder and Underarm Seams

Once the sleeve has been removed, use the yarn you removed from the armhole seam to secure any loose stitches at the shoulder and armpit. This helps to prevent the seams from unravelling, neaten the edge, and strengthen the structure of the garment.

You can tie off and weave in any loose ends on the inside of the jumper.

.

Enjoy Your Upcycled Cashmere Vest!

After removing the sleeves, your jumper has turned into a cashmere sweater vest or sleeveless knit, perfect for layering over shirts or dresses.

Small repairs and alterations like this can really help extend the life of beautiful clothes —especially luxury fibres like cashmere!
